CCP MET OPERA IN HD SEASON 5 CLOSES WITH DER ROSENKAVALIER

Press release

THE CCP Met Opera in HD culminates its fifth season with “Der Rosenkavalier,” a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It will be screened on May 8, 2018, at 6:30 p.m., at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 3. Estimated HD run time is 4 hours and 12 minutes.

Set at the end of the Habsburg Empire, Baron Ochs unknowingly disturbs the illicit tryst of the Marschallin and Octavian one morning. He asks the Marschallin about who to employ to present a silver engagement rose to Sophie, his betrothed, in his behalf. In a whim, Marschallin suggests to employ Octavian, her young lover. To this end, Count Octavian finds himself employed by the baron.

Inevitably, Octavian falls in love with Sophie, who reciprocates the feelings. Together, they must find a way to outwit the baron. Will they be able to succeed? And will the Marschallin yield Octavian to the younger woman?

Director Robert Carsen, who also helms the recent Met production Falstaff, underscores the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask, with a beautiful score conducted by Sebastian Weigle. Gary Halvorson directs the Live in HD, with Matthew Polenzani as Live in HD host. It was re-staged and performed at the Met from April 13 to May 13, 2016.

In this latest staging of Strauss grandest opera, it featured the dream cast - soprano Renée Fleming as the Marschallin, Elīna Garanča as the 17-year old count named Octavian whom the Marschallin is having an affair with, Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs, Erin Morley (alternate with Kathleen Kim) as Sophie, a 16-year-old daughter who is engaged to the baron; Markus Bruck as Faninal, the father who wanted to cement his status through his daughter's marriage; and Matthew Polenzani as A Singer.

The CCP Met Opera in HD series features screenings of the latest operatic productions of the Metropolitan Opera of New York through the high-definition digital video technology and Dolby sound recreating the experience of watching an opera production at the Met “live.” The CCP Met Opera in HD is presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Opera of New York and the Filipinas Opera Society Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with the Ayala Malls Cinemas.
