MUMFORD & SONS WINS GRAMMY ALBUM OF THE YEAR AWARD



English folk-rock band sensation Mumford & Sons added another feather to their cap with the triumph of their latest album at the just concluded Grammy Awards 2013. The album "Babel" won the Album of the Year plum at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, proving how recognized they have become among fans and critics alike.

Babel is the band's sophomore full-length studio effort released last September in several European countries, in South America and in the United States and Canada. The follow-up package to the highly successful debut "Sigh No More" debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and US Billboard 200. It became the fastest selling album in the UK last year, selling over 159,000 copies in just the first week of release alone. In the US it sold 600,000 during week 1 in the market, eventually earning the tag as 2012's biggest selling debut of any album.
The album, released in the Philippines by MCA Music, was actually nominated for four Grammy Awards as it also earned nomination nod for British Album of the Year at the 2013BRITAwards.

Mumford & Sons' other hits include "Little Lion Man," "The Cave," "Roll Away Your Stone," "Winter Winds," and "Lover of the Light," which is also part of "Babel's" track listing. The group, along with legendary Paul Simon, was featured in a recent cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer" by Jerry Douglas.
 
Marcus, who started his musical career playing drums for artist Laura Marling, is married to British actress Carey Mulligan, his childhood pen pal. Their romance became official in 2011 and he proposed to the latter after dating her for five months.

Other members of the band are Winston Marshall, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane.

Mumford & Sons, formed in December 2007, came out of West London and initially recorded an EP called "Love Your Ground." Their debut album was released in the UK and Ireland in October 2009 and in February the following year in the US. The album topped the Ireland, Australia and New Zealand charts.

In December 2010, the band earned two Grammy Award nominations, one for Best New Artist and the other for Best Rock Song for "Little Lion Man". A live performance at the Grammy ceremony led to more airplays and increased popularity for singles off "Sigh No More."

Eventually, the group, whose members play multiple instruments in live performances, won the ARIA Music Award for Most Popular International Artist in 2010 and the Brit Award in 2011 for Best British Album.
